There is one good thing about the recent cell phones wars that was never present when the PC was starting to dominate it’s market niche. There is a lot of healthy competition. Even though the IPhone has a dominant market share in the smart phone wars, they still do not dominate every aspect of the industry. They have not made significant inroads into the business category. This is where Blackberry based phones are still in charge.

Now Apple has another competitor that is slowly taking away a bit of market share. There are a bunch of new phones being released to the market, that are based on the Android operating system. Each phone adds something different to it’s design but overall they all work the same. Even though they are proving to be a worthy competitor to Apple, you should ask yourself a question. Is an Android based phone, the right one for you?

The Android operating system is an open sourced endeavor first created by the people at Google. They saw that the smart phone market was a new frontier to be explored and they decided to jump in. Also, they could see that Apple was starting to dominate the marketplace, and if they did, they could become the Microsoft of the smart phone era. Google jumped into the fray with their first offering, the G1. It was a decent phone, but not up to being an IPhone killer yet. After the G1 was released, a lot of other hardware manufacturers started to release phones based on the Android operating system as well. This was the beginning of Apple starting to see a challenge to it’s dominance.

Now before you purchase an android phone, you must consider that there are differences, when you compare it to an IPhone. Some of the differences are good, others are not as much. For one, the IPhone is still said to have a better UI. UI stands for user interface. Also, the IPhone has a larger variety of applications that people can choose from. Where they have 100,000, the Android based phones only have a little over 10,000.

But, with all of these factors against the Android, it still holds up because the latest iterations of both the software and hardware have really improved. The screen is bigger and more responsive than the IPhone. Even if it has less applications, the applications that it does have are pretty good, quality wise. Also the more recent phones, such as the Droid and the Nexus One, have better overall hardware stats than the IPhone.

These are a few reasons that an Android based phone might be right for you. Go to the store and try one out. You might be surprised, and like what you see.
